Backstage was empty, except for a couple of stray musicians and the diva. She had already sung her last set—slow, deep, and slightly raunchy, as per usual. The band was still pumping away at some old love song, but Miss Augusta had stolen the show.

She never changed out of costume before going to the bar. Tonight, she wore a black velvet gown and gloves up to her elbows, both sparkling with rhinestones. A plunge in the dress revealed most of her surprisingly muscular back, and her dark curly bob was adorned with a scarlet silk rose. She took her time in the changing room, repainting her lips and admiring herself in the mirror.

A glowing young beauty stared back, with sculpted eyebrows, eyelash extensions, and pouty red lips. Augusta’s swarthy complexion had been powdered away, leaving her bright rouge and dark eyes shining brighter than ever. After a few minutes, Miss Augusta picked up her clutch and sashayed back out into the smoky haze. She knew that the boys out front were clamoring to buy her drinks and she liked to keep them waiting.

Sidling up to the bar, she ignored a couple of hopeful greetings from the nearest gents. One man threw in a wolf whistle, which prompted a disdainful glance. She turned to Frank, the fresh-faced college boy who tended bar, and arched her eyebrows.

“Hi, Miss Augusta,” said Frank, handing her a glass of water with crushed ice. “Nice show tonight.”

“Thank you, dear.”

“There’s a couple of fellas who wanna buy you a drink.”

“I know.”

“Oh, and Miss Augusta, there’s, uhh…there’s also a message from Mr. Moretti.”

She shot him an expectant glance. He cringed.

“It seems he organized a little tournament of sorts, and, uhh, he wanted me to let you know that he, umm, may have promised that you would…sort of…have a date with the winner. Anywaysthat’sallhaveagoodevening!”

Following this bold declaration, Frank quickly ducked behind the bar. There was no need, however. Miss Augusta was already stalking over to the pool tables, a look of icy rage flickering over her perfect face.

It had been a slow night, and so Alita had fallen back to her old favorite hobbies or hustling unsuspecting men out of their money. There was, after all, nothing more satisfying than seeing their fragile masculinity shatter as they realized that she was in fact not as harmless as she seemed - or as they thought. Luck had been in her favor - a tournament. Her first thought had been of a higher payout and so she hadn't bothered to read the fine print when she'd entered. The other contestants had sneered and joked at her, some even telling her that it wasn't the kind of game for little girls. She'd just smiled at them, making sure to stick out her chest just a little bit more than usual, and bending a little deeper than necessary as she queued up the ball. She'd beaten them all handily, and they were none to happy which brought a smile to her lips.

At least until she'd been informed of her prize.

Vitale laughed at her disappointed frustration. «A date - not a spot of cash!» he snickered. «How fitting for the hustler to be hustled.»

«Shut up,» she hissed. She'd won, might as well at least see this beautiful woman that was apparently good enough to be a prize men would fight for.

A love song was crooning and Alita could feel the gazes of a few of the men on her; she shifted in her chair, crossing her leg over the other as she leaned back. Let them gawk, she enjoyed the attention. Her dress was strange, she knew, the v-neck front a bit lower than generally seen, the slit in the side that showed off her thigh - all meant to distract and loosen up men. To prime her marks. The bars tended to be the best place for her work, the alcohol dumbing them down, making them all the more reckless, and this one was no different. She seemed entirely at home in the smokey atmosphere with her darker skin and the ease with which she reclined.

It didn't take her too long to catch sight of her "prize". She quirked a brow at Augusta, taking her in for a moment before a smirk quirked her lips. Perhaps this won't be so bad.

Augusta stormed over, ready to put the winner of this little tournament in his place. Moretti might be her boss, but that hardly gave him the right. Renting out his star performer like some sort of cheap whore--that wasn't part of the deal. Yet when she came huffing over to the pool table, her indignation began to deflate. She had expected to find some self-satisfied prick, brilliantine in his hair and green cue chalk on his fingertips, making snide jokes and prematurely declaring victory. When she came to a halt, however, the boys stood blinking back at her. She hesitated for a moment, her mouth open slightly and a crease between her brows, not quite sure who to yell at anymore.

Curiously enough, there was a woman there, too, wearing a smirk and little else. It was quite a dress. For a second Augusta wondered if a prostitute had wandered in, though she quickly dismissed the notion. There wasn't much trade for girls in this kind of joint. Now and then a lady passed through--bulldaggers, generally--but it was more of a pansy club than anything. She didn't know how to make sense of the stranger, so she ignored her, sly smile and all.

"I never agreed to this bull shit," announced Augusta, her nose in the air. "If somebody wants a date, then he should ask for a date. In any case, I ain't picking up the bill."

Alita quirked her brow, already liking the bit of haughty fire she saw in the other woman. She never could stand those woman that seemed to bend to anyone's will, it infuriated her. With a smooth, languid motion, she unfolded herself from the chair and took stock of Augusta, smirk still in place. "Hmm. . .I figure we could split the bill, then, since I'm no man," she said, standing before Augusta.

It was one of her favorite moments, really. No one expected the woman to win ant it seemed that Augusta was no different. She savored it for a moment before reaching down to fish up her coat from the back of the chair and slip it on before holding out an arm to the other woman. "Well, shall we?"

In her mind, she could feel how Vitale had quieted down to his usual role of bored spectator. «What, nothing to add?» she asked. It was strange for the man to be so silent, especially about such unexpected events.

«Of course not - though I suppose you're right, this might not be so bad in the end,» he grumbled; she could feel how he wanted a cigarette. «She's a bit too snobbish for my taste though.»

Augusta watched, hands on her hips, as the pool shark rose to her feet. She sometimes tolerated the attentions of lovely women, and there was no denying that this specimen was an attractive one. But her annoyance over the matter of the tournament hadn't eased. This impudent bulldagger had picked up her coat as if the matter were cut and dried.

"Shall we what?" said Augusta, glancing down coolly at the proffered arm. "I dimly recall saying that anybody who wants a date ought to ask for it herself."

She glanced over her shoulder at the bar, meeting eyes with Frank. The boy shrugged helplessly. Augusta turned back with a sigh, digging through her beaded purse to extract a cigarette. "Anyway, if I go anywhere tonight, it's Mr. Moretti who's paying."
