Danny's smile became the slightest bit less weak at that, but it was the hand that gave him pause. He could feel it, warm against his lower back, and suddenly he wanted so much more. He wanted to be held, wanted his own moment. Someone to care for him, to touch him. He swallowed, following after Billy but stopping in the doorway.

Yes, he knew the other man. Knew how he disliked coffee, and the small smile he would sometimes get when he had a warm cup of tea. In a way, it was the small things he missed about the other man. He bit his lip, uncertain of what to say, what to do. Had there not been the distance between them, he would have simply suggested, in some low whisper with lewd words that the should perhaps retreat for the day. That he wanted a shower, and maybe some help drying off. . .

But instead he remained silent, aching. It was still too early for that. . .

But then. . .

". . .Billy?" His voice was quiet, his eyes somewhat sad, but hungry.

"Hm?" Billy looked over in his oblivious way, eyebrows raised as he leaned back against the counter, waiting for the water to boil. He still hadn't learned to recognize that look in Danny's eyes until it was too late.

And in those short moments, the lack of recognition in Billy's eyes, Danny lost his nerve and dropped his gaze, scratching the back of his neck. "Oh. . .I jus'. . . I feel kinda dirty, like I should take a showah. . ."

He stepped back, backing away, and started for the shower. Though he had sudden fantasies of Billy coming to him, laying him down on the cool tile, he knew better. The man would stay down with the tea, and he would stay in the shower for longer than was truly necessary, letting the warm water wash over him in an attempt to wash away the stress.

Billy's eyes turned from oblivious to confused, and he frowned softly. He straightened up, standing up from his leaned position.

"Is something wrong?" he asked, tilting his head a little and stepping a half step step closer but then pausing. While as unable as ever to read faces flawlessly, Billy could still tell that Danny was not saying what he'd meant to say, that something else was pressing. "You want coffee instead? Or something else?"

Danny hesitated at the base of the stairs, shaking his head. "Ya could say that," he murmured, smiling a bit to himself as he dropped his gaze. "But nah. Coffee still does funny things ta mah head. But. . ." He hesitated and sighed. "Nah. . . M'jus' gonna go take a showah."

He started up the stairs then, stomach twisting and a feeling of resignation settling beneath it.

The bathroom was cold when he stepped into it, starting to discard his shirt, pausing to look at himself in the mirror. It was strange, to see himself now. He'd filled out some while he'd been away, eating well for once, knowing Billy would worry and wanting to lessen it, even if Billy would never know why. He reached up a hand, wrinkling his nose as he felt the bristles from the beard, his hand falling then to run over the bullet wounds, the scars that he could see.

He'd never have another, then, he realized. If he never took another job, there was no risk of being shot. . . It was a strange thought, a security that he wasn't sure he was ready for. He didn't know what he was supposed to throw himself into now, when the nightmares came.

But then, Billy was more important. Billy and Freddie and Tommie.

He turned, flicking on the faucet, waiting for it to heat up.

Billy looked after him, a slight frown on his face. Something had lurked under Danny's words, he had wanted something and the thoughts instantly began turning over each-other in his mind, like they always had when Danny was holding back. Always trying to figure him out to help him.

And if you added those words with the old grin which Billy missed, maybe... maybe...

Billy felt something flutter in his chest.

He'd learned to read that voice, if not the looks and now he felt a longing. Danny had wanted, like Billy had yesterday. He had wanted his lover, had wanted another intimate promise of comfort. Billy remembered it, knew he would never have asked for it had he not been drunk; was it the same with Danny now? That he wouldn't ask? Billy reached out, but was already way too late. The moment had passed where he could react without thinking and he heard the bathroom door shut upstairs.

"Ya could say that."

That look, and Billy felt guilty. Danny had always asked him to stop being so shy. Had wanted him to take Billy's role once in a while and Billy had so often denied him... While Danny, like last night, always had offered himself willingly and let the other man take what he wanted.

The steps in the stairs were silent.

The clothes being shed and left outside the door in a small heap didn't rustle in the slightest.

Only the door gave him a way, the soft taptaptap of bare feet on tiles betraying the presence before his warmth did.

Billy's chest was pressed flush against Danny's back, and in it the heart beat rapdily. The short arms reached around the narrow waist easily, holding on as though that would keep Danny from spinning around and staring at him. The fear of rejection reeked around Billy, and suddenly he wondered if he had made the wrong interpretation.

"... Do you want me?"

An ear flicked at the door, the quiet footsteps, but he Danny was left no time to turn before the arms wrapped around his waist; he tensed instantly. For a moment, he was certain that he was only imagining it, that the voice was just in his head—a product of the dreams and longing that had been building up for weeks.

But no. There was heat, there was a warmth, and he could feel Billy's breaths against his back. Suddenly, he felt as though he could cry, a knot forming in his throat—he nodded, feeling both ashamed and relieved.

"Yes," he whispered, his hand moving, going down to Billy's hand. "Please. . ."

Billy exhaled in relief, for a moment forgetting his goal in the joy of not having misunderstood. He smiled weakly in to Danny's back, the hand not covered by Danny's wandering up to run over the other man's chest.

"You've been eating better..."

Telling him that he knew Danny's body, knew what he was supposed to feel when he ran a hand over his lover's chest and stomach. That he could tell the new details from the old and that he just knew. He knew Danny, still. It had come rather unconsciously, this knowledge. It had sneaked up on him, and he hadn't realized it was there until the subject had been absent for a while. But now it was easy to tell what his hands were used to, what voice his ears had grown accustomed to and what looks meant he had to think. It was a mold which he still fitted in to, if in his mind a bit snugly; he was more aware than anyone else that Danny was not the only one who had changed physically over these months. It was not something high on his list however, his own well-being and most of the time not his looks either —it had long ago become an insecurity he was so used to it didn't affect him in everyday life any more— which both felt like lesser concerns than others. While Billy could wear odd socks and too long trousers, he'd be damned if Freddie went to school in a dirty shirt.

Gently he pressed forward, indicating that Danny should step in to the shower. Goosebumps were all over Billy's body and he pretended it was because he was cold, as he relinquished some of his embrace to allow Danny to move.

Danny leaned back, purring and his breaths beginning to pick up. "Y-yea," he murmured, taking the step forward, into the warm spray; he swallowed. "I jus'. . .wanted ta. . .make shor ya didn't worry."

Those arms. . .how he'd missed them. How he'd missed feeling the other man so close. He groaned softly, putting an arm up against the wall, resting his forehead on it. He'd changed in those months away. There was a new strength, but then there was also a weakness. He was tired, worn through. He'd been alone too long.

"Billy. . .Billy, please. . ."

Billy swallowed, staying close, cheek against Danny's back as the water washed down over them. He closed his eyes when the water ran down Danny's back and then over the obstruction that was Billy's head, down in to his eyes. He listened instently through that warm skin and sharp ribs, hearing that heartbeat that belonged to Danny being drummed out by a heart that belonged to Billy.

Arching, he pressed closer, turning his head to rest his forehead against that back instead. It was a strange feeling, to know that you belonged to someone, but even stranger to think that they belonged to you. You could hurt that heart, scar it, break it beyond repair, but you could also make it race with nothing but a touch. It was an immense power to have when you thought about it, and a responsibility to match. One part of that for Billy, or so he figured, was that he had the responsibility to get over himself. He wasn't really comfortable with these kinds of advancements, even if they were coming surprisingly easily lately. He was learning.

"What?" Billy murmured, kissing Danny's spine lightly, relishing and shivering at the feeling of water-drops slowly caressing his skin, his scalp, like millions of small, warm fingers.

Danny didn't know what to answer. For once, he wasn't sure what words would be accepted, how best to say what he wanted. He pressed back against Billy instead, shuddering. At first, no words came when he tried to speak, just soft gasps and a quiet whimper, but finally he managed to get out, "Hold me. . . Could you jus'. . . Please. . ."

And Danny did belong, heart and soul, to the other man. He would die for him, kill for him. Live for him. He would give up everything just to see a smile on the other man's face. Now, however, he did not know how to say so, how to tell the man. So many times he had spoken wrong, said things that only made matters worse, hurt the man.

Now, he wouldn't use words.

Billy exhaled against Danny's back, kissing up, along it, touching every scar. His hand drifted down, out from underneath Danny's and to the man's lower stomach, pushing against it and thus pushing his hips back while Billy pushed forward. He wouldn't speak either, not now. Danny didn't want the words, he wanted the simple touches and Billy could give him those. Make things easier for a little while, just like the night previous. This was their simplified version of a relationship, something that they could manage now and give them a little bit of breathing room before the more pressing and real problems came in to play yet again.

"Danny..." he breathed out, just that name and nothing more; it was barely even spoken. His breath caught in his throat and he let out a choked moan, fingers digging in to the soft flesh of that stomach he was pressing his hand against. The other hand ran firmly up Danny's back, from the very bottom of his spine to his shoulder, gripping it.

"I love you..."

The words nearly took Danny's breath away, more than anything else and he closed his eyes. That Billy would still say those words. . .that he would still take him back. . . To hear it said was unimaginable comfort. He tightened his hold on the hand on his stomach. "I love ya too. . .luv. . ."

The act was secondary, when it happened, and like times before it was the closeness that Danny wanted, needed so terribly. Moans, soft and not like they had once been echoed off the tile walls, the water deadening them somewhat. It had gotten too hot and they had tumbled out, onto the cool tile, Danny lying on his back and looking up at the other man with something nearing wonder in his eyes. How. . .could he have ever thought things could be better with someone else? How could the temptation have ever crossed his mind when he'd had this. . .?

He swallowed, a small ball of emotion in his throat. ". . .Billy. . ." he murmured, hand coming up to brush the side of the man's cheek, expression softening.

Billy rested heavily on Danny's chest, ear pressed against it and hearing the racing heart within. The man he was pressed against was unbearably warm and the tile he felt against his legs and his lower arms were soothing. Surrounding them the air was still thick with the vapour from the warm water which was still running and had washed the sweat from their bodies. Sitting up was an effort, and the smaller man settled with leaning on his arms, watching the blurry visage of Danny, shifting so that more of his legs would come in contact with the cool floor.

The hand at his cheek lured his eyes away from the mismatched ones, and his eyelids closed as he turned his face in to the touch. It was cold after the hand having touched the floor. There was no effort made in replying to his name being spoken, not thinking this to be desired or needed. Billy focused instead on trying to block out any reality for a few minutes longer, to not remember the angry boy downstairs and the one who had yet to speak his mind on the subject.

The purr that radiated from Danny's chest now was content, at peace—something that the man hardly ever showed or experienced. After a few moments of silence, he let his hand fall, closing his own eyes as he lay there, feeling the warm water, the vapor, Billy's comforting weight, and the cool tiles. A part of him was calmed, finally, and he felt his depleted strength begin to return, the strength he would need to make it through until things could be back to how they were, but happier this time.

However, he hadn't forgotten the boy downstairs either, either of them. He sighed quietly, letting the silence linger a while longer before speaking quietly.

"I shoul'. . .talk ta 'em, both," he murmured, opening his eyes, now calm and slightly weary. Danny truly looked older now—perhaps even older than he should. He wasn't terribly old, true, but he had lived through several lifetimes, he felt sometimes.
