Fynn had just finished making a nice batch of muffins and was letting them cool on the wire racks in the display cases out front. Leon and Lillian, her boss's twins were making a fuss again, they were just about a year old and babbling up a storm.

"Fynn?" She heard her name and walked out front. Eve was standing there holding Lillian. "Can you watch the front honey, these little ones need to be fed." Fynn nodded silently and ducked back to grab her slate table and a piece of chalk then walked to the front. She had learned by now to keep it with her, especially up front since most didn't know sign language. She had been teaching the twins some, it was said that children learned to communicate with their bodies before with speech. Eve knew some basic phrases and bakery related terms. It was easier to sign than write when one's hands were covered in cookie dough. Fynn sat down on the stool behind the counter and started to sketch on the chalkboard waiting for someone to come in.

The cool wind blew and Mortimer tugged his coat closer, feeling almost idiotic walking down the street in broad daylight wearing his coat and tails, and his signature tophat. Oh god, he just knew that some brat would stop him, realizing he was a magician, and ask for a free show. Free show. Like hell. Maybe if the brat showed him a quarter, he'd make it disappear. Twenty-five cents for it's return, of course.

Ah, but Tinny had wanted bread. Why, Mortimer hadn't a clue. Didn't even care enough to ask. And so here he was, walking towards—now standing outside of—the little bakery. He sighed and slipped in, his cape still settled comfortably around him, billowing slightly around his ankles with the breeze.

"Hello?" he called, voice crisp and eyes sharp, but bored.

Fynn looked up from her slate and rubbed off part of the drawing to make room to write. It took her a moment to spin the chalkboard to face him while she took in his appearance with an arched brow.

"Hello, Welcome. What can I get for you today?" She wrote in elegant, curled handwriting, a rather wonderful sketch of a Bridge just down the street was under the words, though partly faded.

Mortimer blinked in surprise at that. Mute then, I suppose. Wonderful, he thought dryly. He sighed, passing by the opportunity to comment on the drawing and gesturing almost airily to the loaves of bread. "Just. . .a loaf. Whatever is cheapest."

There was something about his hands, though, some smoothness and dexterity that was amazing easy to be caught up in. All his movements were fluid, graceful. Meant to entrance. Years of practicing magic and sleight-of-hand had ingrained it so firmly into his movements that he could no longer move them normally, nor could he remember a time when he ever did.

She nodded, pulling a loaf from the display on the far end and bagging it. She pushed some buttons on the register.

"9 cents"
She wrote and showed him, her eyes picking up on his gestures, transfixed for but a moment.

((The actual cost of bread was that in 1929. O.o wow cheeeeap.))

Mortimer caught the look a faint smirk took up residence on his lips at it. He was a natural showman—or at least an egotist, at the very least—and could never pass up a moment to entertain (or showoff, as Tinny would quickly point out to his chagrin). He nodded, leaning forward lightly to seemingly pull the nine cents, one after another, from the girl's ears. He set them in her hand with an almost smug look.

"Why thank you." He paused, frowning for a moment. "If you could, double bag it. I don't want it ripping."

((Wow... Btw, Mort's get up. Or, close to that, anyway.))

She looked at him wide-eyed as he pulled the coins from behind her ears and blushed deeply, putting them in their respective places before closing the register. She grabbed another bag and slid it over the first and handed the bread to him, still blushing furiously.

Mortimer smiled and accepted the bag graciously, bowing a little and tipping his top hat to her. "Why, thank you madame." Another trick then—a wave of his hand and the bread disappeared. Or seemed to. In reality, he had it pressed against his side by his elbow beneath the cloak.

She blinked and gasped soundlessly, pressing her paws to her mouth, she smiled and picked up her chalk board.

"You are a talented magician."

He only smiled. Really, these creatures were so fascinatingly easy to dupe. It wasn't as though he'd turned water into wine or something near so dramatic. Just disappear a single loaf or pull pennies from her ears. A child could easily manage the same, really. Although. . .she does look rather sweet when she smiles like that. . . It was a moment before he truly caught the thought and he shook his head, keeping the light smile firmly on his lips. "Thank you, madame. You should come to my show, some time, perhaps."

She smiled gently, there was something innocent about it, kind.

"When?"

Mortimer lifted a brow. Despite how kind she looked, she was still only a girl and Mortimer was disdaining of girls in particular and she was hardly an exception. (Of course, Mortimer tended to disdain everyone.) But still, business was business. "There is one tonight, at Four Leaf Clover Lounge."

Her brow raised just a fraction and glanced to the window before writing with a smile.

"The speak under there has a damn good whiskey." She wrote quickly, erasing it as soon as he read it. She wasn't a girl after all it seemed, just....careful, somewhat shy. She reddened just a bit and smiled. "What time?"

Mortimer blinked somewhat in surprise at that. So it seemed the girl drank—at least occasionally. How intriguing. He stood, straightening his tie and cloak. "Well. The show begins at seven sharp, madame."

She smiled and nodded.

"I'll see you there then." She wrote. "My name is Fynn."
