Just curious. Are we 1/2 through? 3/5? 1/10th?

Also, why did you choose to set the story now as opposed to in Lackadaisy's heyday?

(Also - if posts like this belong in another thread please let me know. Wasn't sure if it fell under the "dumb questions" category.)

When I've talked with Tracy I've not entirely jokingly compared Lackadaisy to Lost, where we start in media res and as we go forward we learn about what made the people who they are today.

Starting the story prior to Atlas' death would have meant telling a very different kind of story....there'd be nowhere near as much mystery as to why the characters are who they are now. Heck, Atlas's shadow essentially looms over current events, but we've never heard him speak and have very little objective information about him. I'd love to know who he really was, but clearly a lot of the mystique would be lost at that point...not to mention the fun we have speculating. :)

As it is we can go forward in time and learn things as the characters do, or we can, via flashback, see what happened and learn why things are as they are. I can't speak for how much Tracy may have planned out for LD's past, but I do look forward to finding out!

I agree... Starting things off from a low point makes the story more manageable. If you started out while Atlas was still alive, you'd have to sit through the tragedy of deal and decline. It'd be a tragedy. However, now the story is all about looking for prospects to improve... And one smileycat trying to make verything better.

I have a feeling that this story is not going to have a happy ending. Like. At all.

Probably not.
I mean, they all die and all.

I don't think they'll all die, but I doubt anyone will meet a good outcome / future.

What would you propose? I can see Viktor dying... Maybe Mitzi, with Zib or Wick handling Lackadaisy and Freckle/Ivy getting married.

The end of Volume 2 marks the halfway point. There's still a pretty sizable chunk of material left to cover in this volume, though. I wish I could relate it all a lot faster than I do.

It's set post-heyday because telling the story of a speakeasy that runs with ruthless efficiency seemed less compelling than telling the story of a speakeasy that's struggling to survive, with the twinges of melancholic nostalgia and some semi-tragic grasping at shadows underwriting the effort.
That's not to say that Lackadaisy didn't experience its share of tribulation and dysfunction even at the height of its glory, but I think many of the characters are a little more haunted now that that's in their past. And perhaps that makes a gang of scoundrels and monsters ever so slightly more sympathetic (even if they don't deserve such regard).

@Grindy
I mean unless they find the fountain of youth, they'll all die of life.

@Tracy
Halfway, eh?
It seems like it's only starting.
Does this mean alot of development is going to happen over the next 2 volumes?

Well we aren't even at the end of the 2nd volume yet, if it's as long as Vol 1. then there is still about 1/3 of this section of the story left to see. I'd say there is plenty of room for lots of development.

(Just realized I repeated what Boss Lady just said, hmm, must be thick headed tonight...)

That makes sense, Tracy. I would really love to see more of the heyday, though. It seems like a lot of fun was had.

As for character deaths I still think Zib is slated for the axe, but potentially anyone COULD die. That's part of what makes this story so interesting. Anyone could die at any point. I would like to see Mordecai kill Asa Sweet. I would almost put money on Freckle killing Mordecai at some point as they are quite clearly meant to face off. Mordecai is a real puzzler - seems he either has to meet a horrid end or pull a massive Snape as someone earlier in the thread suggested. That said I don't see how someone can come back from that much murder.I could see Viktor dying a brave, self sacrificing death (or maybe even killing Mordecai himself.) Ivy could even die, at which point Shit Gets Really Real and it goes from battle of the speakeasys to outright war.

I think Mitzi, Freckle, and Rocky are least likely to die, but mostly because they're kind of the Big 3 of the series - the Picard, Riker, and Data if you will.

I wonder which one of them is Data...?
(Or Picard for that matter)

Picard's a quirky sex machine.
Nuff' said.
