It is the year 2009 in Zaddel, the capital city of Cascadia, one year following the revolution, her borders now stretching from Tehachapi in the South up to the British Columbia interior. Millions have died, and their bodies line the disputed border to the east of Idaho’s panhandle, providing nutrients for the fauna native to the Rocky Mountain peaks.
The decision was made to secede early in May 2006 after abundant deposits of Cascadium were found in veins under the Pacific Northwest.
Cascadium is a substance exhibiting orthorhombic crystalline structure, solid at room temperature and the color of which is indescribable. When grown in soil dosed with minute amounts of Cascadium, trees remain green all year round.
With this in mind, scientists have been gathering and studying great volumes of Cascadium, which has shown to have significant life-prolonging properties. It is thought this is due to as of yet not understood rays of energy emitted by this material, which have also been demonstrated to result in a marked increase in creativity, especially in regards to the engineering of electronic systems, as well as the composition of music.
When present in the atmosphere, Cascadium causes a distinctive white fog and often results in intermittent light liquid precipitation.
Side effects of Cascadium include interpersonal isolation, promiscuity, or genuine psychedelic introspection. Active amounts of Cascadium have been found in coffee, salmon, as well as certain strains of cannabis indica.
If at the right time of night, you happen to look into a body of water that’s reached its peak of stillness, it’s not out of the question to suggest you might see s near-imperceptible halo of lime green phosphorescence along with your own reflection as the half-moon shines over your shoulder through the obscuring pall of clouds.

There is a folk tale spread by certain pre-Cascadian tribes of a lake surrounded on all eight sides by a dense tangle of thorny vines, from which the darkest berries hang in bundles of aggregated drupelets. Inside of this lake, isolated by the impenetrable brambles, there is a huge salmon very nearly the size of a mature orca whale, with a hooked beak big enough to snag and easily devour a black bear if it were to venture too close to the water. It is said he recalls the moon when it was new, back before the raven’s feathers turned black.
Obviously, the story goes on to say that if you were to, for example, approach this leviathan, upon performing a very specific series of rituals, he would be not at all opposed to granting a single wish to the one standing on his shore.
It is said that he was killed, and is dead now, a casualty to the greed of the white man. He was suffocated by pollution, his decayed flesh devoured by the same mouths that licked their chops in anticipation while sitting in an idling car at a fast food drive-thru, waiting impatiently for the last buffalo to be delivered in a greasy paper sack, with a chocolate shake and curly fries. It is said that he will have his revenge. This is inevitable.
When pushed to identify the berry in question, the teller identified it as the Himalayan Blackberry (R. Armeniacus) without fail.
