Freddie winced a little when the spell was deflected, and his wand went up in preparation of defending himself. When all he got was that short barb he could almost feel the hairs at the back of his neck rise with anger as his jaws clenched. It was incredibly provocative to be told to try again, as though this was merely a test, an exam he had to pass, rather than a proper duel. Mouth twisting in to a slight snarl Freddie's reaction came with no delay. The wand was lifted in a bigger, less subtle gesture, but the burst of light it produce would turn out to be completely useless, aside from one crucial thing; it was a cover, a distraction when Freddie threw his next spell. He had always been a physical sort of boy, and this time he had a goal decidedly different from just stunning Macaulay where he lay. Instead he was attempting to lift the other student and hurl him in to the boat he'd been leaning against previously.

(Sorry it's so short, but... spells...)

Haha, no problem!

"Better." The sound of his voice was faint above the groan and creak of wood as the boat strained against gravity, and the forces butting it about on ropes that should have long since rotted through.

Macaulay hadn't interfered with the spell-- rather, he'd counteracted the result Freddie had been trying to achieve rather than the root of it all. A cloud-like web had streamed from his wand, just in time managing to snare his fall against the carcass of the rowboat. The strain of Freddie's curse was evident, but the blanket of silver behind him protected his back, cushioned his head. If any of his blood was falling, Freddie hadn't put it there.

He was held above the ground, making no attempt to fight the force that had closed on him like a fist. It may have even hurt him. And yet... It was almost as if he were playing with Freddie, as a parent indulgently lets their child throw slaps and punches. Gently cushioning where those little fists fell, with no intention of stopping the barrage, as if curious to see what they might try next, what damage they would try to wreak.

"What now?"

Freddie almost felt a physical resistance thrum through his arm when Macaulay produced the web to cushion his fall. As frustrating as it was, it was also rather pleasant to at least see his adversary do something. Any feeling of satisfaction was lost in the rising anger when Macaulay kept goading him, pushing him, as though it really was just a game.

The demand for Freddie to make another move was barely spoken before the teenager moved his wand again, this time in a harsh sidewards movement, not relinquishing the grip of his spell as he yet again tried to send Macaulay flying, but this time aiming for the water instead of the boat. It would have been one thing to just drop the older student in, to hover him over the surface until he did something to get away, but Freddie was angry now, and instead he tried to forcibly push the Slytherin under with the help of the spell. Things were starting to become personal, and an urge to wipe that grin, that smug arrogance from the young man's face was rising in the same way nausea might in Freddie's throat. He didn't care what the consequences were, but he wanted fear, wanted anger, anything else besides what he was getting now.

To his credit, in the moment before he vanished beneath the dark water, Macaulay's face looked... surprised.

There was a splash and then stillness as the ripples evened out, and only a few bubbles broke the surface. From where they were cast up into the dark wooden ceiling, the threads of blue light that reflected off the water's surface grew calm, and you'd never know that somewhere far beneath was someone held under.

When the moment came for Freddie to draw him out, something happened. Like a fishing line whose hook catching some old, drowned tree, the spell would grow taught and awkward, and however much one were to strain-- at first gently, and then trying to haul, arms straining-- the water only stirred uncomfortably, and nothing broke that tranquil surface. That calmness that quietly belied that, somewhere deep below, perhaps tangled in the skeletons of old boats, someone wasn't down there drowning.

"The God's sake," Major's voice was low and full of urgency, "Graham, what are you waiting for?! Take him out!"

The wave of satisfaction that hit him when he heard the splash, felt the thrum in his arm when the other boy's body hit the surface, was tremendous. It made the earlier aggravation worth it, and perhaps a bit prematurely Freddie relished in a feeling of accomplishment. Give the prefect a quick dip, perhaps a little scare, and then say something witty about the older student keeping a cool head before depositing him on land and leaving him to drip-dry and ponder how he was bested by a fifth-year; that was all Freddie could have wished for. But things didn't go according to that plan. The smug smile took a few seconds to die off when Freddie flicked his wrist, tugged at his victim, and was met with absolute resistance. He tried again, the movements growing first less casual, then adamant, and finally urgent. That was when the unsettling sensation of tendrils being snapped off, sharply breaking, sent a jolt of cold in to Freddie's heart as he lost control of the spell.

"I... I'm trying..." he started to say, eyes growing momentarily wide and the heavy wand that had previously been weighed so casually in his fingers was now clasped in a white-knuckled grip of panic. It was awful, some might say a bit monstrous, but while the initial fear rose on Macaulay behalf, the one that pounced a moment later and completely over-took Freddie's shocked mind for those eternal split seconds was for himself. Being expelled would have made him cry with relieved joy if he drowned another student; this was so far past any other mischief he had ever been punished for that Freddie wasn't even sure how severe the punishment could turn out, just how royally fucked he would be.

What would it feel like to have someone's blood on his hands?

The strange stirring in his stomach felt like nausea. Or deep-seated hunger.

Freddie thought he waited hours for Macaulay to break the surface with a gasp and a crossed look in his eye, but in reality the blue-eyed boy didn't even have time to blink before his own body moved without his interference. His brain was numb, detached, but his hands came up and pulled his heavy robes from his shoulders, shedding the garment at the same time as he stepped forward towards the water in one smooth movement. It felt like he was watching himself from above as his wand lit up, because God knows he would need the light underwater; there wasn't a moment's hesitation when Freddie mid-step poised himself to dive in.
