Times for the pack had always been a little on the trying side. There were less then a dozen of them ever there, and they were big for a pack anywhere near an urban center like they were. But they'd been there for a long time, a steady pack with ever changing members and hand picked Alpha leaders. It was almost like a a line of kings, and while they might not have been biologically a line as humans, there was hardly ever any out of the pack line. Who ever became the next Alpha was always a bit of the former Alpha, or at least the one before.

But since they'd always held home relatively close to human population, there was always the ever present fear that one day, some innocent human would happen upon them at just the wrong time and things would explode badly from there. And the way that society was pushing back out into the woods again, taking up all the country with their houses, they were going to soon be far too close to humans again for anyones safety.

Just a couple of decades ago there were already people moving out into their hunting grounds. And while the people there had accepted that there was something strange about the group of people that live at the edge of the woods, they didn't try and figure out what it was. There was a built in thing about humans that told them that they were dangerous and they should stay away. But they looked peaceful enough that they didn't send the people packing up ad moving. That was one thing about this pack that tended to set them out from the others. They did whatever they could to avoid killing humans. Which is why they were as big as they were. No one wants to hunt you if you don't seem like a huge monster that is going to eat their children.

The best thing about the changes in society that had happened was that people wrote them off as some extra strange hippie commune, even if the 60s had come and gone. But it was still something they easily clung to as there were a fair number of people from the 60s still around and they could pull of the crazy hippie well.

But people kept getting closer and closer, starting to disregard the feelings that came when being so close to something so dangerous.

This fact made Rebeca Axford happy though. She rather liked having people to talk to and spread love with. She was one of those remaining hippie type folks, her bite and conversion both accident and surprise. Tree huggers and lovers weren't ones to survive the curse, weren't ones that made it through. Because the nature of a wolf, regardless of what the human portion wished, was to kill. But her spirit was stronger then anyone would have expected and she lasted through, and lived.

The girl was everything you thought of when you thought of a flower child. Thin and lanky, long red hair, bright smile (even if her teeth showed a little too much), flashing green eyes, and piercings and tattoos even. She alone with her bubbly, bright, and overly friendly personality, was probably the reason that people had started to fear the pack less. How could bad guys have someone so...full of love and life, live among them?

Dinner with the pack was a loud, somewhat messy, meat filled event that involved a lot of beer that didn't get anyone drunk. The number of girls there was always small, women, for some reason or another, didn't often make it through the bit and conversion. They tended to die like children did, which was why men where chosen over both almost every time. But the women that made it, didn't mind being with the men, because they were the stronger ones anyways. So Rebeca didn't mind being squished in between two bigger, rowdy men as she ate almost delicately compared to the rest of them. Despite her past, hippie ways, she ate meat like the rest of them. She wasn't stupid. She just enjoyed being around anyone so nothing bothered her.

Donovan Gallagher usually opted out of pack meals, choosing instead to eat by himself. He usually found a clearing where he could see the sky, he liked stargazing. He was one of the born wolves, and was one of the lucky ones to survive past fifty years of age. He was 138 now, but didn't look past forty, in human terms. His loner status (despite having a few close friends in the pack) made him the subject of quite a few fights. The others thought it was weird for a born wolf to stay away from the pack like he did, it wasn't natural. He was still recovering from a more recent fight, he had slash marks across his face from a younger male who wanted to pick a fight. He had come off the better then.

His age also meant his features had taken on a more wolf like persuasion. His ears were pointed, and his canines had grown longer. His snaggletooth was another cause of ridicule, some in the pack called him "Snag". He was fit, at six feet tall. He had to be, or he wouldn't make it to two hundred years. His medium length, brown hair and his beard, though well kept, still gave him a sort of hermit-y look, though he wore a white button down shirt with rolled up sleeves and dark brown trousers.

He wasn't a fan of the people. As a solitary... person, per se, the encroaching of humans onto the pack's territory was unwelcome for him. He refrained from killing any, as he knew it wouldn't be smart, so whenever he sensed humans, he would climb a nearby tree. It was a hassle sometimes, but it was better than having the humans going on a rampage through the forest, seeking out any and all of his kind and killing them.

He finished his meal, and checked his pocket watch. It was around eleven o' clock. He stood and started walking back to the camp. When he got there, he noticed the pack's dinner was still in full swing. He thought for a second, looking at them, and, against his better judgement, walked over and sat at one end of the table, listening in on the conversations circulating around the table.

She didn't know how she did it, but she'd gotten out of the car. She was dizzy and sick-feeling, but her body was pushing her to run, run, run. Eli, his name was Eli and he was helping her, she felt bad for running from him. But her heart was beating high and fast in her chest, and she needed out. Always, since she was a little girl, Aurelia had been claustrophobic, but it had been drilled into her that she was to be a lady and stay inside. Running out in the fields was for animals, and not people. When she was asked to leave home, it had gotten better because there was the windows she could open and the rooftop where she could sit at night.

But that's what happened, wasn't it? She had gotten off of work and hadn't even been out of her work clothes, she had just kicked off her shoes and peeled off her socks and climbed out the fire escape and then up to the roof. She needed to be above the city, in that place where everything looked cleaner than it was and shone with that light that was particular to cities, to urban places. The moon was above, and the roof top was silvered, and there was just a touch of cool to the night air. It was good, because she was overheated from the mid-shift at the industrial laundry where she worked.

Aurelia hadn't even noticed that she wasn't alone for a long moment, and when she did realize that there was a huge dog up on the roof with her, it was already snarling and pacing towards her. Her heart had stopped for a pregnant moment as she stared at the wolf, because it wasn't a dog at all, it was a giant wolf, and it's jaws looked like it could bite her head off at the neck without even trying. Had it escaped from the zoo? Was there a zoo? She didn't know. But how did it get up here? She didn't know that, either. A horn on the street below distracted it, and Aurelia took the second to bolt. She only got a little head start, and it was hers, and she thought she'd get away, but then it figured out the fire escape. They were two stories up, but it had cornered her and she was almost about to chance it and jump. It jumped first, it's maw open wide and latching on to her arm, just under her shoulder, and they both went over the edge. There was the crushing pain of the bite, the feeling of falling, and then the impact. She didn't get lucky enough to black out when she hit the pavement, so she heard the sickening crunch of a few of her ribs snapping. The bite mark was burning, she realized with a tremor of fear, and she couldn't breathe properly. Just little gasps and catches.

Somewhere close by, the wolf was growling, and there was a rhythmic thump thump thump that she knew she should know, but couldn't place. And it was getting harder to think and focus. Her thoughts were like fish in the tank at the Chinese place on the corner. Fat and slow moving, until you reached for one, when it flicked it's tail and was gone. A pair of boots speared in her view, and something boomed. The wolf was gone, maybe. The boots had blurred then, despite her efforts to keep them in focus, and then she was swallowed up by unconsciousness.

She had survived twenty four hours. Eli Winterboom was shocked. Frankly, the fact that his tiny, quiet neighbor had survived the first hour had shocked him. She was lucky of course, that he had been home and knew what was going on. That he was fast enough to pull his shotgun and scare off the bastard. Goddamn rouges. Biting with Malice should be something you could be put to death for. Because the wolf wasn't starving, wasn't converting a mate, wasn't doing anything but attacking to watch the poor girl die from the bite, or of fear. But it was gone now, and he was taking her out of the city. To the Pack. That's were she would belong now, if she could survive. That had been the last full moon; she wouldn't know if she could live through the change until then.

Eli wasn't Pack, wasn't one of them. But he did know of them, and on occasion did them a favor or two, and they didn't eat him. It was alright for the big black man, this agreement. He had kept the girl, Aurelia Farehope, in her apartment for the first full day. He had cleaned the bite mark and the other little scrapes from her fall-- the virus, or venom, or whatever the hell it was had done it's work kicking her body's healing abilities into high gear so anything internal was already fixed, he was sure-- put her in a clean shirt that was almost five sizes too big for her, a pair of floppy shorts (he couldn't bring himself to replace her under garments on her), and set her on the bed.

By the time twenty four hours rolled around, she was breathing shallowly, and soaked two sets of sheets with her sweat, and was delirious. She was probably getting more of what he had told her than he thought, though. She had nodded weakly when he told that he was taking her someplace better for this, and let him wrap her up in a blanket and lay her in the back of his car. He kept the music low and the windows down to help circulate the air.

Close to what he thought of as 'Pack Land' he pulled the car over, checked on his charge, and then stepped away from the car to take a piss. It was then that she rose up out of her delirium far enough to manage the seat belt buckle, the door lock, and spill out of the car. She was charging away into the dark forest as fast as her weakened body could take her. Eli swore, zipped himself up, and threw himself at the car. A flashlight was in the floorboards of the front seats, and he grabbed it and went after her. "Aurelia! Come back!" He didn't care about quiet; he was pretty sure the Wolves would have sensed them by now anyway.

There was that tugging and awkward kind of feeling that came when wolves from a diffident pack came into a pack's marked territory. But this didn't feel hostile or unfamiliar, at least not totally. It was just different.

Rebeca wasn't quick to notice it, she was too caught up in trying to get the big, much older looking man next to her to stop chewing his stake like he was a barbarian and at least cut it up with his knife first instead of ripping it all off with his teeth. But it didn't take her long to notice something was up. All of the pack visible stiffened, or at least moved in such a way that showed they'd felt what was going on. There was a new wolf, or an almost wolf at least in the area and they were getting close, quick.

Rebeca wasn't the fastest ones to her feet, she hardly ever was anyways. But she was up quick enough, her speed boasted just the slightest bit for her supernatural nature. She moved slow for what she was, by choice, but faster then most human's could do themselves. There were a few shouted orders through the air and a few men took off fast, the sounds of popping bones accompanying a few rips of clothing and the forms of wolves took off through the woods towards the new comers. They'd bring in who ever it was that was coming into their grounds, and they probably wouldn't have too big of a problem with that as the not quite human-human was coming right for them.

Donovan had felt it, seemingly before the others, that there was an intruder on their grounds, as he wasn't quite as caught up in the pack's frivolities. He paid it no heed, though. The others would pick it up soon. And soon they did.

He watched as a few transformed and took off in the direction of the newcomers and almost cringed at the tearing of their clothes. A bloody waste of good wearables, in his opinion. He wasn't much a fan of changing, he only did for hunts, or if a younger wolf, more often than not completely full of himself, attacked him to try and gain higher status in the pack. Being one of the born, he was stronger and faster than the bitten, not by much, but it was noticeable. The born and the bitten. All one in the same pack, yet so different. The bitten still held on to a bit of their human selves, whereas the born never have such impulses to be 'human', more wolf than man.

Of course, Donovan wasn't predjudiced. It wasn't like he cared enough to make a fuss over anything. A lot like now. Despite the fact that there were intruders, he chose instead to stare deep into the forest, chin in his hand, scratching at his fuzzy cheek with a sharpened nail.

Aurelia stumbled on her feet and fell, landing in a bed of ferns, the spores and loam ground smearing her. She didn't move from her spot though, curled up on the damp ground, the ferns like a tent around her. A moving, shifting tent that brushed her arms and legs, and played with her hair. She had to close her eyes, though; her vision was at once too sharp and swimming, making her stomach roll in painful nausea. She her breath calmed to soft, short pants, and again the urge to run over took her. She stayed still, however; she couldn't stop shivering-- both fever and weakness-- kept her on the ground.

Something was coming, and not just Eli. She could hear him, of course, his deep voice boomed even when he was just talking, and the thump of his boots were getting closer. But there was something else, something different, tugging at her body. She didn't recognize it, but part of her felt it was familiar, part of her wanted to go, now, towards it. For a minute she thought she was, but then she heard Eli swearing and felt warm, soft cotton under her cheek.

Eli looked down at her and wished he hadn't. She was dirty and sweaty, panting and her face was twisted in some sort of desperate plead. No pain, not yet, but soon. "So...some...th-thing..." she panted, looking up into his face. "Coming..."

He nodded, and shifted her so he could carry her bridal-style--it wouldn't have taken much to hold her on one arm, but this would be more comfortable for her. "Yeah, kid...I know something's coming." He could hear them now, just barely. Damn stealthy fleabags, always so quiet on a hunt. He kept walking though, the flashlight held awkwardly in one hand, towards their compound, or camp, or whatever the hell they called it. "Hey. Hey you wolves. I'm not here to screw around, guys, so don't get any ideas about eating me." Despite his size and the protection familiarity offered him, he was still a little nervous. He was only human, after all.

The wolves circled around the pair once they came into view. There were only three of them, but it would only take one of them to do some damage to them. The looked bigger then they should have, fur all raised up in a way to make them look bigger. It was a natural defense. One of them, a smaller, greying looking one, made it's way forward, sniffing at the air around them some before pulling back and wrinkling up his nose and sneezing.

The wolf stepped back a few more steps before there was the sound of cracking, breaking, and popping bones and joints that came with the shift. The man, because the wolf was indeed a man, who started to form in front of them had a slightly pained expression on his face but he made no noise of pain as his fur retreated and the skin came through again. He stood, naked, in front of them as his human face looked almost blankly at the pair of them. "Winterboom?" he questioned, he'd never met the man before, but he'd been near enough to know the smell, and he'd had things that had been in that man's possession a long time so they smelled of him as well. "Who is she? She smells funny..." his nose wrinkled at that again, shaking his head some.

Rebeca jittery. She didn't like this tension in the air, didn't like the feeling of a fight that was brooding. It made her feel sick. She looked around for a moment before padding over to Donovan on her bare feet, soft skirt flouncing around her hips. She looked up at him as she approached, cautious since he wasn't one for being openly friendly like she was. She gave him a little hug though, knowing he'd not like it as much as she did. But she didn't mind. "Don't always gotta be so uptight, you know," she said softly to him, knowing he'd hear her as she looked up at him, chewing on the ring through her bottom lip.

Donovan could feel Rebeca walk towards him, he knew she was there, but he was still unprepared for the hug she gave him. Within himself, he was surprised, but he willed himself not to move. It wasn't often a member of the pack expressed kindness towards him, even though Rebeca had been nice to him for quite a long time. He shifted his gaze to look at her, his expression unchanging. "I'm not uptight. I don't hold myself higher than the rest of you. If anything, I'm under you. The only reason I'm given any status at all is because of all those fights I appear so magnetically drawn to. Not like it means anything." He looked back into the forest. "There are humans on our grounds again." He corrected himself. "A human. And a changing one. I take it you felt their presence?"

Eli nodded, taking a step towards the greying wolf-in-man's-skin, but only after the man himself had stepped forward. The sounds of the change made goosebumps form on his skin, and it took all of his will to not shudder in horror. "Yeah, it's me." He was much bigger than the man, easily a foot taller and much broader, but kept his voice a respectful tone. Faint light was reflected off the dark skin of his bald head. He wasn't surprised that the one questioning him knew who he was, at least by smell. He could smell the change in Aurelia, after all. The girl made a noise in the back of her throat, a whimper of discomfort, and he rocked her, like he'd do a child.

"She's my neighbor, from the city," Eli said, looking down at her. His voice was soft, worried. She was paler than she normally was, and her clothes were damp with sweat, and her long, curly hair was plastered to her forehead and tangled down her back. She looked like a small ghost. He glanced up at the greying one, face set grimly. "She was bitten last night."

Rebeca made a face at that, wrinkling up her nose quite a bit. "Your aura's all sort of dark, muddiness. That isn't good. You're not balanced," she went on, shaking her head a bit, making her long locks of ginger hair cascade behind her a bit. She looked and sounded ever so much the flower child that she was. "And being up tight has nothing to do with where you rank in any society. It's all about how relaxed and in tune with others and things that you are." She gestured some, arms waving about some on her expressive nature. But he'd brought it back to what she was trying to avoid talking about. "They're not fully changed, they still smell to human..."

There was a low growl from one of the other circling wolves at the mention that she was bitten. Women didn't make it, it was known. Who ever had done that had done it to let her die. And that was one thing this pack did not approve of. You didn't kill a human for no reason at all and since they were in the city, there was hardly a reason for him to have been in his wolf form to begin with. "Where's her biter then? Did he just leave her to die?" The man stepped forward, unabashed by his lack of clothes and tilted his head to look down at the feverish girl. "You say she was bitten yesterday?" he asked, sounding surprised. Normally the curse killed people by this point. This girl might have a chance yet.

Donovan looked back Rebeca's way, raising his eyebrows, but otherwise keeping his face emotionless. He didn't like how Rebeca would pry into him like she did. "I can't help it if my instinct causes me to prefer being solitary. I'm in tune with nature, not beings, especially this group. No offense to you, you are the anomaly in this space of dischord. The pack has their rules and ordinances, but they don't seem able to leave those who wish to be alone. I'm as balanced as I choose to be. If I'm balanced the way I am, it's how I am meant to be. Who am I to change things? Who are you to?"

He picked up the cup in front of him and looked inside, even though it was empty, listening to Rebeca. "I noticed that too. Not only that, one is female. I wouldn't give her much time. The curse is a strong one, though I haven't had the changing myself, being born as I was. You were one of the 'lucky' ones. I hear it's excruciating." He looked back at Rebeca, as if for validation.

Eli shrugged, and out of natural reaction, held the girl a little tighter under the Elder wolf's close scrutiny. He would have done the same with any naked man looking down at her like that, or like anything. "Hell if I know. I ran the damn thing off before it could do much else, aside from the damage it already did." There as a low growl to Eli' voice; he was still angry with the beast for doing such a thing. He wish he had had the balls to shoot it dead right in the city.

As if knowing in her delirium that they were talking of her, Aurelia opened her eyes and looked blearily up at the men looking down at her. She whined softly again, as if asking for them to help, some how, and after squirming a little--scrutiny had never made her feel anything but uncomfortable-- she fell still, once more. Once she had, Eli sighed softly and nodded. "Yeah...last night. The pain hasn't set in yet. It's just been the fever and the deliriousness. But it'll come soon, won't it?" He wondered if she'd survive the pain that came after the fever. He was still surprised she'd lasted this long; her skin was burning to the touch. Her body didn't look like it could take much more stress.

Rebeca still made a face at that. She did not agree with what he was saying at all. Well she would have if she thought that he'd believed it himself. Yes, the pack was all sorts of chaos in a human mind set. But for wolves, they made perfect sense. The violence they did was in harmony with their nature, the way the fought and bickered for their positions was harmony for them. But Donovan seemed he'd rather be alone. Loners were dangerous, and it was probably best if he stayed with the pack, but he wasn't as right as he insisted he was. But his age and strength put him above her in the pack, as she didn't fight for any position ever, plus she was female anyways. So she didn't fight him about it and let him keep his ideas that way, tilting her head to the side to show her neck to him in the submissive way that was her position to do.

The woman looked away from him Donovan, her smile for once slipping fully from her face. "The pain of the shift once you're used to it is bad enough, it never stops being painful. But that first one, that first one after spending hours burning up, your blood feeling like it's going to boil straight out through your skin, the pain, the aching, your bones feeling like they're turning to brittle. Hours feeling like Death is going to come and take you any moment, or at least you pray for it to happen just to end it all...Not to mention the pain that comes from the bit itself. If you're lucky, the bit was on purpose and it's only small enough to get the venom in. Or if you're unlucky and they rip off half of your shoulder." She lifted a hand subconsciously as she spoke, laying it down over her neck and shoulder on the left side; rubbing and squeezing at it. "I wonder why anyone would willing go through the conversion knowing how much pain they'd be putting themselves through for the rest of their lives."

The wolf-man nodded his head, eyes not lifting from the girl in his arms. "Yes, soon it will," he said as he turned to the rough bark of one of the others. "The Alpha's going to want to talk to you," he said firmly without giving Eli a chance to reply to that. The man stepped back more, turn and shifted right then, just a few steps in front of Eli and Aurelia with all the bone breaking, skin shifting, and fur growing involved. The now wolf shaped man looked up at the much taller man and tilted his head some before padding off into the woods again, the other two flanking Eli and his charge.

They walked him slowly, keeping with his pace and not running off ahead. There was nothing in the woods to harm the man but the wolves, and they were right there already. They walked into what was a bit of organized chaos. There where what looked almost like huts they were so small, gathered around a central area with one big house that had the look of something built even before most of the older wolves had been born as humans. Most of the pack was either still eating or milling around near the large table they had set outside for everyone to eat at together. Bonding was an important thing after all.

Donovan listened as Rebeca regaled her tale, still looking at the cup. Nobody had told him exactly what changing was like before. It was mostly: It hurts, a lot, or: Pain like you wouldn't imagine. Despite his expanse of knowledge, he was unaware how painful it could be. "Sounds like quite the ordeal. I'm sorry you had to go through that. I haven't turned anyone, or attacked them, for that matter. I suppose now, after hearing what happens after, I would be even less inclined."

He looked back up, into the forest. He could sense something. "They're coming back. They're taking the humans with them. I wonder who bit this one. Could it be anyone in this pack?"

Eli wasn't sure how he felt about talking to the Alpha, but knew that he didn't have a choice. So he nodded and sighed. This was for the girl, after all. She hadn't done anything to anybody, and look at what that got her. A two-story fall and a new way of life that would probably drive her mad, if it didn't kill her first. But out here she would have something of a chance, should she make it through. There would be adjustments, but here there would be others like her to help. Being alone and not knowing yourself was worse than death, he knew.

Eli stepped back when the man-wolf changed, right there, with all the wet snapping and crunching noises it made. He pulled Aurelia close, his big hand moving to cover her ear, like a big brother protecting his little sister from an ugly word. She squirmed in his arms, hands reaching for the bandaged bite-mark, rubbing at it like it was sore. He sighed softly. The pain was going to set in soon. He followed the wolves gamely, not willing to let the fear surface.

He could only think of the heart of Pack Land as a little village, like the ones in South America or something. Where there was a main hut and then lots of little ones. And he had no idea that there were so many of them. Of course, Eli was biased. Seeing more than three at a time was overwhelming for him. Still he puffed up a little and shifted Aurelia's body higher up. She opened her eyes blearily again, and swallowed. Her mouth was so dry, and her arm ached. The whole arm, pain radiating out from her shoulder, all the way down to her finger tips, all the way up the side of her face. "Are we there yet?" she asked, her voice raspy and dry.
