Samuel hesitated, fingers lingering over the buttons of the machine. He was loathe to risk William's life that way, but the man had a point. The Meistar had once shown him what would happen to anyone who was caught in the current when it started—the spectacle had been unlike any other he had seen. He drew in a slow breath, straightening his pain-bent back into something more conducive to movement.

"Fine," he conceded, moving away from the machine slowly; rapidly, his face was paling. "You remember the order? Once you enter it the current will cease and when you turn the master key once I'm across, you will have only so long to cross before the current returns."

With labored and aching steps, he moved towards the walkway and the current, waiting and tensing — preparing. In the distance, they could head the men's voices echoing down the pipes.

"One, five, seven, two." William repeated the order of the numbers, hesitating a moment before stepping forward. He looked to the machine, reluctantly and cautiously entering the code. He didn't even want to touch it... this machine, this... contraption. It was nearly demonic in his eyes, something cruel and perverted. What kind of twisted mind should it not have had to be, to think up something like it, and frighteningly enough have the knowledge to create it?

"Go, hurry!" he urged, tearing his eyes from the machine to look at Samuel, and at the tunnel where the electricity had abruptly died, leaving the passage safe to cross. William watched as the other man made his painful way over to the other side, and when he was certain that Samuel had reached his goal, William turned back to the machine. Touching the key, he shivered faintly as the kitten stirred against his stomach inside the shirt, and it brought his eyes up towards the voices which were drawing nearer. This was his last chance to break away. He could turn that key and run, run to the ones which followed them. If he cried and said he was held captive by that monster, then they would take him with them and he would be free again; and Samuel would be left alone.

Blue eyes sought out Samuel's, and they were panicked. Torn.

Then the key was turned, and William clutched the kitten to his stomach as he ran in to the tunnel, following Samuel.

He couldn't leave. He couldn't leave the man now. Not when he was wounded like this, chased like an animal.

There was a moment where time seemed to stop, where it seemed that William would turn the key and flee to the mob's arms, beg for sanctuary among them, and leave Samuel to rot alone in the inner sanctum. He could, of course, disable the flow from his own side, but he would need the key to do so. Even without it, he could find a way to break the machine, perhaps, but it would take time. Time, which he would never take. Rotting in the sanctum or rotting in the tower or library—it was all the same in the end.

In that moment, Samuel knew fear, knew resignation.

But then the man turned, taking the key and bolting through the walkway with the small kitten clutched close, only just managing to make it as the current crackled back to life. It was with disbelief that he now stared at the monk.

But it didn't last long as the sounds of the mob came rushing back to the forefront of his mind. Samuel hissed between his teeth, eyes narrowing as he turned to the ornate doors and braced himself, pulling one side open.

"Get in," he hissed, straining to hold the heavy door open. "Touch nothing within."

Before the pair was a dark hallway with stairs that descended into a small vestibule that opened up into a high chambered room with four large pillars that reached into the blackness above. There were three doors, one directly in front and one on either side. The one directly in front of them seemed almost normal, while the two on the sides were much larger, and looked as though they could only be opened with a lever and pulling system that would raise them.

The admonition to not touch anything was unnecessary, and for some reason the words felt old in William's ears. He stood still once they were inside, as always having to trust Samuel to know his castle and the domains therein. The young monk thought that he had seen it all already, that he could no longer be amazed by his surroundings, and even though the room was not as frightful or curious as the tunnel they had just gone through it was certainly enough to have him look around in confusion and wonder.

The whole castle seemed full of these strange mechanisms, doors that one could not simply open, mysterious, twisted and quite simply wrong places and things. It was not the work of any man, William was sure, and not someone of rightful beliefs. A slight feeling of choking settled upon him as he watched the pillars which stretched up in to the ceiling, a desperate wish to go outside again, to feel fresh air and get the light of either the moon or the sun. His skin hurt all over from its bruises and cuts, and he simply wished to get away from this place. No matter what crypts, tombs or dimly lit churches he had been in, he had never felt this way, as though the ceiling which was almost too high to be seen would crush him and the air choke him.

The panic of having done the wrong choice curled around his heart, bringing up his hands so that they could clasp and he shut his eyes tightly, trying to form some sort of prayer in his trembling thoughts, ask for more strength and guidance.

Sounds echoed strangely in the strange space and Samuel's footsteps were no different, the sound made all the stranger by how he walked with one foot dragging slightly. Now, safe behind the thick stone walls, miles underground, he felt he could breathe. Safe. It was almost comforting and he turned to look at William. It was strange to see him there, among the strange carving that adorned the walls, the symbols that had been carved into the very bedrock the room had been shaped from.

"They'll not be able to get to us in here," he murmured after a long moment, "But I am not certain how long we'll have to wait them out for." He turned, pulling a lever on one of the pillars to open another room. "Come, there's a room the Meistar had prepared for such an occasion."

He didn't wait, didn't feel patience enough to coddle William at the moment.

This time the path was hardly long, though dark. Still, Samuel knew well enough where he was going and found the small tinderbox in the cabinet in the dark. He lit the match, quickly lightly one of the torches that guarded the entrance. He took one and began to light the candelabras that were scattered about the ordinate room.

It was a strange room, this, with all the amenities of normal life, though simplified with that strange elegance the rest of the castle held. There was a wide fourposter bed, a few storage crates, some simple utensils and necessities - perhaps the strangest addition stood at the far end.

Out of the gloom, the fountain rose up, a thick column of spinal cord with a grotesque childlike face bowed over a pool and spilling water in a steady stream. Attached to the spine were stunted, almost twisted wings. It must have been as high as two men, if not three. From the pool came two crossed legs, with and almost wing-like feature on either side.

Samuel extended an arm to the table just across from the bed, beside the crates. "Please, take a seat. There should be enough salted meat stored here to last a few days, if it comes to that."

William's hands remained clasped as he felt the kitten shift in his shirt, but he had to open his eyes when he heard Samuel move again, the eerie steps and their echo prompting the young monk to cautiously follow through the door. At first surprise took him as he was stricken by how normal these yet again new surroundings were despite the path which had taken them there. But then the sound of water hitting water, running, reached his ears and as the light fell on the fountain he shied back.

A monster rising from the water, a snake from hell, a demon coming to claim him after he had been so willingly lead in to the dark depths of this place, they were all conclusions that for a split second seemed perfectly plausible until he saw that the macabre beast was carved from stone, that the child's face from which lips the water spilled in to the pool below was immobile. Just as his shoulders relaxed however his blood ran cold and the hairs in the back of his neck rose up as his eyes fell on the legs which protruded from the water. The first thought which came to him made him deaf to what Samuel said and itwas not that the limbs he was staring at with wide eyes were a part of the sculpture; so instead what he saw were the deathly pale legs of a corpse. Someone had been drowned in the fountain.

One of his hands shot out to grab for the door's handle, trying to retreat again, the other hand releasing the kitten to let it hang in his shirt to point shakily towards what his terrified eyes were latched on to.

"S-Samuel—!"

Samuel nearly jumped in surprise at the shout and whirled around, certain that he would find some intruder or another. Instead, he only found the other man staring, pointing at the fountain. A surge of irritation welled up in him for a moment before he let out a snort. He turned his back on the younger man, limping over to slump into a chair, wanting only to rest his injured leg.

"Calm yourself, dear William," he muttered, vexed. "It's only a fountain - all of it, I promise you, is made of old stone." Again, he gestured to one of the chairs. "Come. Sit. There is no need for you to be so upset over mere stone."

Still he couldn't be bothered to see if the other man followed his advice and closed his eyes to the world. Beyond the sounds of their breathing and movements. All about the silence was nearly deafening, impending.

William remained pressed against the door for a moment, looking briefly to Samuel and then back to the legs. When looking more carefully one could note that the legs were indeed not proportional to those of a human, and the texture not as smooth as real skin. But as soon as he hat noted this, he made sure t look away. The fountain's twisted design made him wary of it, and it madce his skin crawl.

As his heartbeat lessened its rhythm the young monk exhaled shakily, though was hardly granted any relief as this soothing knowledge was followed by a slight sensation of entrapment. There was no leaving here now, he was certain, lest he wanted to risk the town's citizens coming down on him with their wrath. And after all this time of telling himself that perhaps his purpose here had been to save a man's life, no matter how far from innocent that life was, William knew that he couldn't leave even if his own safety was ensured.

Exhaling again he carefully took the slightly agitated kitten from his shirt with stiff fingers and set the crippled animal down on the floor to let it explore; something William was not inclined to do himself. It was as though if he moved he would become more aware of just how far under ground they were, and he'd choke from the mere thought.

Looking over at the resting figure in the chair, he swallowed.

"... Where are we?" he croaked out. "What... is this place?"

Samuel heard the voice, the questions, but it was a long moment before he bothered to answer. ". . .The inner sanctum. It was my meistar's own. . .private quarters, where he went for peace."

It was perhaps a strange thought, to think that someone could be so at peace buried so far beneath the earth. Samuel remembered the first time that he had been brought down to the chamber - it had been frightening to him, suffocating, but the meistar had decided that it was to be his initiation. It was the first time the meistar had touched him.

Silence reined against for a long while and the older man looked up tiredly, gaze fixing on the younger. "You didn't have to return," he said quietly, eyes searching. "You were finally free. Why come back?"

Peace… William felt none of it. Didn’t understand at all. Carefully he moved a few steps further in to the absurd space. It wasn’t as suffocating as he had thought it would be; the castle was so dark otherwise that it wasn’t a big difference. Perhaps their long, winding and not always sloping walk had helped fool him that he was still above ground.

The question he was asked prompted reflection though, even if the young monk had already made up his mind when coming there. It felt like perhaps it had been the wrong choice now, but he couldn’t say it outloud, or even think it. You didn’t question’s the Lord’s mysterious ways.

“… I think there is a reason the Lord sent me to you.” William murmured, standing awkwardly at the center of the room, feeling all his wounds ache as he said this. “And while it says in the bible ‘an eye for an eye’, all life is sacred. Murder is wrong.”

Samuel only laughed at that, the sound low and echoing in the wide space. "Nex veritam est." He shook his head. "Et semper erit. Illam nōn mūtāre potes - nūllī illam possint." He leaned back in the chair, looking up towards the vast vaulted ceiling. These were the teachings of his meistar, the teachings he had known and which made more sense to him than anything William could say.

"Certē sine nece nōn vīvere potest."

He shook his head, wincing at the pain in his leg. Perhaps it was time to remove the cilice. . . Carefully, he began to slip down the blood-soaked pants, frowning at how deeply the metal thorns had cut this time. The strap was slick with blood as he pulled it free, undoing it with a grimace and letting it fall to the floor. "Wilhelme, mihi laciniam dā, amābō tē; egeō depleturā subsistere."

(Murder is life/reality. // And always will be. You can't change that - no one can. // Without a doubt, one can't live without murdering. // Give me a strip of cloth, please, William; I need to stop the bleeding.)
